Lakeville Leverages Brownfield Assistance & Hosts Fall Festival

Lakeville Leverages Brownfield Assistance & Hosts Fall Festival

The Town of Lakeville hosted its first Fall Festival in some time in conjunction with the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Run.  As the state’s bicentennial torch passed through town, the community held a Fall Festival on property acquired in conjunction with brownfield assessment efforts provided by the South Bend Brownfield Coalition.  Lakeville was the first town in St. Joseph County to receive Bicentennial Nature Trust funding from the State of Indiana.  These funds enabled the purchase of the land upon which Lakeville is planning a Wetland Park Facility and Trail Project. This was the site of Lakeville’s first Fall Festival in decades.  Additional Phase I ESA and Phase II ESA grant awards will further assist Lakeville in additional property acquisition to support the Wetland Park Facility and Trail Project – this will include the barn seen in these photos!

This Fall Festival included; a town wide parade, historical re-enactments, area church choir groups singing and various craft and food vendors. The Lakeville Fall Festival is now re-established, and hopefully will be expanded to at least one more festival during the year due to the overwhelming positive response we received. Several people have expressed an interest in renting the barn and property to hold their private functions.  Lakeville represents a small town and rural community that is making big things happen with brownfield resources and the powerful tool of leveraging assistance.
